How to choose your mattress

Faced with all the mattresses lined up on the shelves, you quickly feel a little lost with springs, foam, latex, shape memory. The choice, technologies, and prices are so varied that it is not easy to navigate, whether in-store or on the Internet. Especially since the mattress quality is closely linked to sleep quality, it is better to ask the right questions before buying rather than relying on the seller’s arguments or the high-sounding names of technologies.


There is no ideal mattress. The choice of a bed is personal and depends on many criteria, including morphology, habits, and feeling, a very subjective measure. A good bed must be comfortable and, above all, offer good support for the spine to avoid back pain. So that our mattress test results apply to the most significant number, our tests are carried out with two people of opposite size, a small and thin woman and an overweight man. The support and the absence of deformation of the spine are measured in dorsal and lateral positions. A mattress that suits one person may deem uncomfortable by another. In other words, when you sleep together, you try the beds together before buying and taking your time:

  • Lying on the mattress, you try to pass your hand between your loins and the bed. If we succeed, it’s a bad sign: it’s too firm.
  • Then we change position. If it’s laborious, it’s too soft, or its shape-memory layer is too intense.
  • Finally, we push the elbow into the mattress. If the hollow remains marked, the model is eliminated. It is too soft.
  • The choice is then a matter of feeling, well-being, or even price.


The support of the mattress should not be confused with its firmness. The support corresponds to the sag of the bed, its resistance to sinking, and its stability and damping. Proper support of the spine will help prevent back pain.

Firmness is, above all, the feeling of comfort when you lie down on the mattress. This is also called welcoming. It depends on the fabric or the thickness of the surface filling. There are different levels of firmness:

  • Very flexible
  • Soft
  • Balance
  • Closed
  • Very firm

The level of firmness desired does not trust the label’s statement. Since there is no standardized firmness scale, each manufacturer defines it in its way. For one, a “firm” mattress may be described as “soft” by another. The only good way to assess the level of firmness of a mattress is to try it on. Note that many manufacturers present tables relating to the morphology and firmness of the bed. But there is no absolute rule! The sectional thing is to choose a mattress that supports your body well and, in particular, your spine.

Is a thick mattress more comfortable?

The thickness and density of the mattress depend above all on the type of mattress: springs, foam, or latex, it is filling, and whether it is a daily or extra bed. Generally, foam and latex mattresses are thinner than spring mattresses. Thus, foam mattresses have an average thickness of 18 and 25 cm. It can vary depending on the layers (shape memory, for example). Between 14 and 18 cm, they are more suitable for an extra bed or a child’s bed. Spring mattresses offer a thickness of 25 cm or more.

But if thickness and density can modify the reception, it does not guarantee quality and good support! It is why we evaluate the help of the mattresses during our tests: we calculate the resistance to sinking by applying a force to the center of the bed. It must resist without compressing firmly. This test provides information on the ability of the mattress to absorb movements without hindering them.

Does a mattress topper provide better support?

The mattress topper sits directly on the mattress. It is then protected by the mattress pad and held in place by the fitted sheet. It provides more comfort in terms of reception and further protects the mattress. On the other hand, the mattress topper does not change anything in terms of support: the spine’s support is identical, whether there is a mattress topper or not.


The padding is an element of comfort: it thus conditions the reception and makes it possible to regulate the temperature and absorb humidity. On the other hand, the filling does not influence sleeping independence. There are two types of filling: synthetic or natural (cotton, wool, silk, latex, cashmere.). If you tend to sweat a lot at night, opt for padding made of natural materials.


Every night, we evacuate water in the form of sweat. Good ventilation of the mattress helps to preserve it better. The ventilation depends on the type of mattress (foam, springs, latex.) and its quality. Avoid viscose or viscoelastic (shape memory) beds if you tend to sweat a lot. Latex, on the other hand, can be attractive.


The fundamental difference in technology between the mattresses is that the innovations with promising names come mainly from marketing one-upmanship.

If the choice is eminently subjective and if the market remains dominated by foam models, spring mattresses gain comfort by adding layers of foam. Overall, they now absorb movement and foam mattresses. But it should not conclude that they are suitable for everyone: a bed must try, and you can feel good on a foam or latex mattress. In addition, the spring mattress is preferably combined with a box spring—an additional expense avoided by buying a foam mattress when equipped with a slatted base.

Spring or suspension mattresses

Pocket springs

Pocket spring mattresses are the most common on the market. Each spring is wrapped individually: each, therefore, reacts individually according to the pressure it receives, thus offering sleeping independence. The sachets also avoid the rebound effect. Pocket spring mattresses also benefit from good ventilation.

Multi-coil springs

They are made from a continuous steel wire that runs through the entire bed. These are known for its firmness and robustness. If you sleep together, however, nocturnal movements can quickly become annoying.

Biconical or non-pocketed springs

Biconical spring or non-pocket spring mattresses are wire springs and foam, cotton or wool filling. Unlike the pocket spring mattress, the pressure exerted on the mattress is felt over the entire surface. The springs can also make noise. Therefore, this type of mattress is not recommended for people who tend to move a lot at night.

Foam mattresses

Polyether foam mattress

Polyether foam mattresses are entry-level products. Their lifespan is relatively short. They also react badly to humidity. On the other hand, they are perfectly suitable for children or extra beds.

Polyurethane foam mattress

The significant advantage of polyurethane mattresses is their hypoallergenic aspect. On the other hand, its main drawback remains its sensitivity to humidity.

There are two types of polyurethane mattresses:

  • high density: this type of foam mattress generally has a thickness of less than 30 kg/m 3. It is to use occasionally;
  • High Resilience: High resilience mattresses are best for daily sleeping. They offer firmer and more toned bedding than polyether mattresses. This foam is more ventilated and more resistant over time.

Latex mattresses are renowned for their durability and their elasticity that conform to the body’s shapes. Their cells provide good ventilation. Therefore, this type of mattress is attractive for people who sweat a lot at night. They are also very suitable for allergies, as latex has an unfavorable environment for dust mites. On the other hand, latex mattresses are generally quite heavy. The presence of handles can facilitate their handling.

Natural latex mattress

Natural latex comes from rubber tree sap. Mattresses are generally not made of natural latex only.

Synthetic latex mattress

Synthetic latex is a petroleum derivative. It is cheaper than natural latex.


Memory foam mattresses are made of heat-sensitive viscoelastic foam. Memory foam can cover all types of mattresses, whether spring, latex, or foam. This type of mattress reacts to body heat and thus adapts to the morphology of each sleeper. If you change position, the mattress returns to its original shape and readjusts. Memory foam mattresses are part of the top of the range of bedding, with often high prices. They elicit extreme opinions. We praise their incomparable enveloping side, which ensures a good quality of sleep, or we complain about the contrary of being cramped without being able to move.

These models are also sensitive to ambient temperature. The foam can thus soften if it is boiling. Conversely, it can harden if it is freezing. The viscoelastic foam also makes it more difficult to ventilate the mattress. Therefore, this type of mattress is not recommended for people who sweat a lot at night. 


In general, the winter side has a ticking (the fabric envelope that covers the mattress) that is a little thicker or even slightly more filling. But it has no impact on comfort; you don’t feel the difference.

That said, the summer/winter side is of undeniable interest. It encourages turning the mattress at least twice a year, which prevents the filling from settling over time. Taking the opportunity to reverse head and feet also helps distribute the pressure better.

Distinguishing between winter and summer sides is straightforward: the bed label is sewn on the winter side. You can also recognize them by the materials of the ticking. It can be wool, cotton, linen, polyester. It offers extra comfort (robust, elastic, breathable) depending on the material used. Remember to protect the ticking well by installing a bed protector. For young children, you can opt for a waterproof mattress pad. On the other hand, it is not recommended for adults: it is useless, it would prevent the bed from breathing and give you a feeling of heat. Choose breathable materials such as cotton or linen.


It does not matter whether they protect from dust mites or microbes. Most mattresses that claim to be “anti” are chemically treated with biocidal substances, classified for their harmfulness.


One person mattress

The standard dimensions of a single bed are 90 x 190 cm. There are also 90 x 200 cm single beds which are more suitable for tall adults.

Two-person mattress

The standard dimensions of a two-person bed are 140 x 190 cm. However, 160 x 190 cm mattresses are increasingly present on the market and tend to establish themselves as standard sizes.

For more comfort, it is also possible to find slightly longer mattresses (140 x 200 cm and 160 x 200 cm) or even wider (180 x 200 cm).

Favoring standard sizes allows you to enjoy a more excellent choice of bed linen.


The mattress choice depends on the type of bed base.

Box spring 

The box spring is less firm than the slatted base. It provides sturdy and plush support. It is suitable for all types of spring mattresses (biconic, multi-coil, or pocket). However, it is not ideal for foam or latex mattresses.


The slatted base offers firm and regular support. It is suitable for all types of mattresses.

Adjustable slatted base

The adjustable slatted bed base – manual or electric – is ideal for people with blood circulation problems or varicose veins. Raising the head can also make it easier for allergy sufferers to breathe. Finally, the adjustable slatted base offers better mobility for people with slight disabilities. Spring mattresses are to be avoided.

Many manufacturers advise changing the bed and box spring simultaneously for better longevity of the bedding. However, if the box spring is suitable for the bed and shows no wear, it is useless.

To note. If the bed is thick enough, the box spring will not change the characteristics of the bed. In addition, there are now breathable mattresses that can be placed directly on the floor without fear of mold. It is no longer necessary to invest in a box spring.


It is essential to take care of your mattress for hygiene reasons and preserve its good condition.

  • Air the bedroom every morning.
  • Protect your bed with a bed protector. Choose a breathable one: favor natural materials such as cotton. For young children, choose a waterproof mattress pad.
  • Maintain temperature between 18°C and 20°C in the room to prevent bacteria from growing even faster.

  • Spot clean with a cloth lightly dampened in soapy water. Dry with the hairdryer.
  • Turn your bed regularly: reverse the head and feet; if it is reversible, change sides. Be careful, and some beds have support zones to support certain body parts, such as the shoulders, the pelvis, or the calves. If you change the mattress face-up or reverse the legs, the bed will no longer adequately support these targeted areas.


When the mattress is damaged, it is essential to change it to preserve your health and back. Signs that should alert you:
